Actions have been taken in order to adapt Tuktoyaktuk to a changing climate.

Mitigation actions currently being implemented have a lifespan of 30 years within which time the hazards to the community are anticipated to increase significantly. It will be important for the community to develop a vision for the future of Tuktoyaktuk based on values and identity, identify acceptable and appropriate adaptation options, and determine thresholds at which the transition to alternative options must be considered. The time to start planning is now.

The climate monitoring research suggests that Tuktoyaktuk will have to relocate in the next 30 years. The development of a managed retreat plan, as a last resort, takes a long time and requires a lot of engagement from the community to design a place where people want to live. The goal of this project is to provide information about the impacts of climate change and to engage community in discussions about the future of Tuktoyaktuk, in place and in a new location.

The future of Tuktoyaktuk can only be designed by those who know the community well. Over the next year we will be asking you to share your opinions on adaptation. You can learn more about community event, surveys and summaries of past events by clicking the link below.
